21st CENTURY WATER CRISIS
#5
THE NILE WHICH IS THE LARGEST RIVER IN AFRICA AND IN THE WORLD DEEMED TO BE THE GIFT OF EGYPT ACCORDING TO HERODOTUS. GIVEN RISING PRESSURES OF DEMOGRAPHY, CLIMATE CHANGE AND GEOPOLITICS THE NILE IS NOW TAKING CENTRE STAGE IN RELATIONSHIPS WITH IT'S NEIGHBOURS. THE NILE BASIN WATER TREATIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY GOVERNING THE FLOW AND USAGE OF THE NILE WERE ESTABLISHED WHEN BRITAIN WAS THE COLONIAL POWER AND REAFFIRMED AFTER EGYPTIAN INDEPENDENCE.

HOWEVER SINCE 2010 THE OTHER NILE BASIN COUNTRIES ARE STARTING TO TAKE MATTERS IN THEIR OWN HANDS.  CAN EGYPT RESOLVE TENSIONS WITH ITS NEIGHBOURS OR WILL NATIONS RESOLVE TO WAR?  THERE ARE ALSO IMPLICATIONS IN THE RISE OF A  HEGEMONIC GREATER ISRAEL WITH A GROWING POPULATION AND WATER CRISIS. IN THE SO CALLED MIDDLE EAST PEACE PLAN LAUNCHED RECENTLY ISRAELI SOVEREIGNTY IS BEING EXTENDED OVER THE WEST BANK AND JORDAN VALLEY. IT CAN BE VIEWED ALSO AS A LAND AND WATER GRAB IN TERMS OF DEALING WITH WATER SCARCITY.    IS GREATER ISRAEL EYEING THE WATERS OF THE NILE ALSO AND WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS THEREOF.
