NATIONAL SHAME

THE blight of enforced disappearances has become almost normalised in our society, with hardly any voice being raised against the unlawful detention of citizens.

It seems that people have come to terms with the fact that individuals go ‘missing’ in Pakistan and if they’re lucky, will miraculously turn up one day. However, if the victims are not so lucky, families will be called to collect a body bag.

One faint ray of hope has been the judiciary’s perusal of this troubling phenomenon. In a recent hearing of the Islamabad High Court, where nearly a dozen petitions related to missing persons were being heard, the IHC chief justice said that the court felt “embarrassed” that the issue was still lingering.

The bench observed that enforced disappearances stigmatised the image of Pakistan, and brought the country into disrepute. It is hard to disagree.

At one time, the issue of enforced disappearances was primarily a problem in Pakistan’s peripheries. Mostly, it was Baloch separatists or their sympathisers, Sindhi nationalists, suspected religious militants or MQM cadres who went ‘missing’. Rights activists and journalists were also whisked away if their work rubbed the powers that be the wrong way.

But in the aftermath of the May 9 events, the scope, and brazenness, of this deplorable practice has expanded greatly, with even members of well-connected families not spared. We have witnessed the bizarre spectacle of people being freed by courts hauled away again by ‘unidentified’ elements numerous times.

The fact is that in the current scenario, unabashed disrespect for the law and due process has gone beyond just disappearing people; powerful, unaccountable actors have become so emboldened that they now feel confident enough to ‘punish’ citizens despite what the courts and the Constitution say about honouring fundamental rights. No civilised society can allow such a mockery of the law to take place.

During the aforesaid IHC hearing, the bench asked the attorney general to bring up the issue of missing persons with the caretaker prime minister. With  due respect to their lordships, this issue requires all power wielders in Pakistan to take a strong stand against enforced disappearances, and indeed all violations of the constitutional order.

Where the missing persons’ question is specifically concerned, the chief justice of Pakistan, who has been a high-profile advocate of this issue, can ask unelected forces where they stand on this and the steady erosion of fundamental rights.

Moreover, little can be expected from the caretakers; only an elected government can forcefully raise these issues, and bring these deplorable practices to an end. But perhaps most importantly, it is the power elite that can initiate change. Is the state comfortable with the fact that Pakistan is seen as a lawless land, where people disappear and are arbitrarily punished?

PAKISTAN ELECTION 2024 RESULTS SHAKE PAKISTAN. PTI SWEEPS THE COUNTRY. PAKISTAN IS AT A CROSSROADS.  WE ARE WITNESSING HISTORY AS THE PEOPLE OF PAKISTAN HAVE SPOKEN. THE ESTABLISHMENT MUST RESPECT THE RESULTS AS ONLY THIS CAN ENSURE THE COUNTRY'S STABILITY.    WITHIN 12 HOURS IT HAS BECOME CRYSTAL CLEAR THAT THE ARMY THE KINGMAKERS IN PAKISTAN HAVE INTERFERED IN THE ELECTIONS. THEREFORE IT IS UNFORTUNATELY LEGITIMATE TO ASK WILL THE COAS'S RIGGED ELECTIONS LEAD TO CIVIL STRIFE, CHAOS AND ANARCHY WITH THE PAKISTANI PEOPLE . OR WILL THE PEOPLE OVERCOME ADVERSITY AND PREVAIL?  THIS WILL BE REHEARSED SOON.

PEOPLES VOICE
https://www.dawn.com/news/1812116/peoples-voice

THERE is a hush today in the corridors of power. A higher force stirs. The time is at hand for the people of Pakistan to speak and for others, in nations near and far, to bear witness to their decision. This electoral cycle has been unlike any in recent memory.

At stake are not only the continuity and evolution of the country’s crisis-ridden political system but also the foundations of its social contract. With the country at a crossroads, 128m voters have been handed the power to decide which path it should take forward. It is hoped that most will exercise it today in any one of the more than 92,000 polling stations nationwide.

Thousands are contesting for the 266 National Assembly seats, and thousands more for a seat in one of the provincial assemblies. By tonight, hopefully, we will know whom the voters have chosen to trust.

It is important that everyone make themselves heard. Our freedoms and choices may be limited, but the only lawful means to improve our lot is by voting in sound and capable leaders who are best suited to representing us in parliament. This right should not be foregone.

Exercising the vote is not merely a civic duty; it is an assertion of one’s freedom, a declaration of agency, and a reaffirmation of one’s belonging to this nation. We are fortunate to have this right, which has been earned through the sacrifices of generations past.

This election has been a silver lining throughout the tumult that has lately roiled Pakistan. For months, the people have been looking forward to having a say in who ought to be making executive decisions on their behalf. Despite many apprehensions, they have held on to the belief that their right to choose will make a difference. Today, as this right is exercised, the public’s will must be respected by all without qualifications or limitations.

The ballot box is not merely a receptacle for pieces of paper. It is the crucible in which millions of Pakistanis place their aspirations, grievances and dreams as they renew their contract with the state. It is important that the state respects this trust and facilitates the exercise in every manner.

The tragic loss of life in Balochistan yesterday has cast a pall of gloom. As indicated in the [url=https://www.dawn.com/news/1812115/balochistan-blasts]editorial below, the state must take every measure to ensure citizens’ security today and guarantee that the polling exercise will be held in a safe environment.

Given that they are being held after considerable delay, it is important that voters are able to participate freely in these elections, which must be concluded to the public’s satisfaction. History awaits our people’s verdict. The state should not falter or fail them in this defining moment.
